Residents at Whitney Place Assisted Living and Memory Care at Westborough have been busy knitting away with the goal of donating blankets to newborns this winter.
Giving back one stitch at a time
The group has been spending time each Saturday knitting blankets to be donated to the maternity ward at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester.
After speaking with a friend who works in the maternity ward, Whitney Place Recreation Director Marketa Rosecka-Vilimek developed the idea to make blankets for babies and worked with the recreation team to determine a plan and schedule for knitting.
Since beginning in February, the residents have made about 20 blankets and are planning on making as many possible before Christmas.
“It is great for our residents to pursue a project like this one, where they know they are making a positive contribution to the community,” said Rosecka-Vilimek. “Knitting is also a social activity; they really enjoy their time together sharing stories and laughter.”
